The Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway is one of that special 'select' number of lines which evokes a particular thrill among rail enthusiasts. In itself, other than the stiff climbs through the Mendips from Bath to Evercreech Junction and the sylvan scenery through which the line passed, there was nothing to especially commend it to the enthusiast. However, with such stock as "Jinty" 0-6-OTs: 4F 0-6-0s: Johnson 0-4-4Ts: 2P 4-4-0s; Stanier "Black Fives' and the famous 7F 2-8-0s the route exhibited a totally different flavour to the norm. With such evocative trains as the 'Pines Express' and with Bulleid Pacifies also to be seen in latter years, the line was certainly not ordinary.
