YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO HELP THE TRUST RESTORE OUR NEWLY PURCHASED SECTION OF THE SOMERSET & DORSET MAIN LINE

The Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust is pleased to announce the purchase of an important section of the former S&D Main Line railway track bed. In so doing we have ensured that this land, which is vital if we are to achieve our long term expansion plans, will remain available for railway use.  

The Trust has purchased the section running from just south of the Chilcompton Tunnels to the Redan Bridge, a length of some 750 yards together with several acres of adjacent former agricultural land which the vendor stipulated had to form part of the purchase.  The Trust will benefit greatly from the ownership of this additional land.  It provides a useful point of road access and, in the long term, has income potential.

Whilst the Trust is keen to look at clearing and managing the newly purchased section of trackbed, a large amount of consolidation work to the land must be undertaken, including the installation of robust fencing. The Trust is starting this  appeal to attract donations towards covering the costs of fencing and our development plans for this section of our railway.

In due course the Trust will produce and publish a project plan of work outlining the specific tasks and costs of the restoration, allowing donators to hone their donations to specific elements of the restoration. Additionally, those who make substantial donations and regular monthly contributions by standing order will be open to a number of benefits at Midsomer Norton to show our gratitude to their commitment to the project.
