92207 'Morning Star' Appeal

YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO HELP THE TRUST PURCHASE AND FINALISE THE RESTORATION OF BR STANDARD CLASS 9F No. 92207 ‘Morning Star’

When 92220 ‘Evening Star’ hauled the last Pines Express in 1962, no one could have foreseen that a 9F might again steam on Somerset & Dorset metals. You now have that opportunity to help make the dream come to fruition and for the Trust to own a BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 locomotive.

92207 ‘Morning Star’ spent just over 5 years working for British Railways before its untimely withdrawal from service. Purchased in 1986 by Keith Bottomley, she left Barry Scrapyard and has been under steady restoration since then. Now a running chassis, Keith has offered her for sale to the Trust for £150,000.

Included in the sale is the boiler and 80% of the parts required to complete the restoration to working order. It is estimated that the total cost to restore the locomotive will be in the region of £500,000, which will include the fabrication of a new tender and the overhaul of the boiler, both of which will cost over £130,000 and £200,000 respectively. The magnitude of the task in hand is not to be underestimated and this is very much viewed as a long-term project which will potentially take 10+ years to complete, dependant on success of appeals.

The Trust however considers this a unique opportunity to cement our long term desires to recreate the Somerset & Dorset Railway at Midsomer Norton as it would have been during the early 1960’s.

This initial appeal is to cover the purchase of the locomotive safeguarding its future to the Trust.

In due course the Trust will produce and publish a project plan of work outlining the specific tasks and costs of the restoration, allowing donators to hone their donations to specific elements of the restoration. Additionally, those who make substantial donations and regular monthly contributions by standing order will be open to a number of benefits at Midsomer Norton to show our gratitude to their commitment to the project.

Further information regarding the project will be available via our website: www.sdjr.co.uk

All donations will be gratefully received, and if donors are able to Gift Aid their donation, we will be able to claim an additional 25% at current levels
